About
Ringle

Ringle is an online platform that helps students in Korea learn English by connecting them with tutors primarily based in the US and the UK.

Ringle is a platform that offers English conversation classes.
It connects students with native English-speaking tutors on a one-on-one basis.
Users can choose a tutor of their preference, pre-select the materials and schedule for the lessons, and book a class with their preferred tutor.

Why Study?

We noticed that our users require better learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
Many either shifted to other services for supplementary learning or stopped using our service altogether.

Goal

Encourage users to use the service frequently,
even in the absence of classes.

Achievements

New page got 30% traffic in 2 months.
73.3% users used learning feature on non-class day.
Average 500 users completed an activity daily.

Mission

There were Missions in to aspects.

1. Create a solution to increase platform retention.

2. Improve the learning environment for Ringle users.

Design Question

“How can we improve learning experiences outside of the lesson to make them more comfortable and enriching?”

Users leave the service after completing their purchases or lessons.
We conducted surveys and interviews to understand the reasons behind this behavior.

Some users believe that it is challenging for individuals to learn using Ringles.

Although Ringle provided various learning materials, including reading content, VODs, and video classes, they were scattered in several locations, making navigating difficult and time-consuming.

Findings

  • Users expect to get their money's worth in learning material.

  • Some users needed to learn beyond Ringle's offerings and turned to other platforms.

  • They had to look for the information themselves, study consistently, and if they couldn't, they never used the content again.

Hypothesis

Providing users with new learning content and a separate learning space can improve users' experience of Ringle.

If the learning content and space are helpful, users will use it even without video classes.

Ultimately, Users who do not purchase class credits
will be attracted and converted into potential buyers.

Conceptualization

Create a user-friendly space for daily English activities and personalized content recommendations by Ringle.

  • Using quiz-type activities to aid in learning based on the user’s leaning data.

  • Collect dispersed learning materias on Ringles to establish a learning environment.

  • Motivate to continue learning English and access the Ringle platform.

User Test

The hypothesis for new learning features was validated by observing usage patterns, feelings, and time spent with the developed prototype.

Regardless of its placement on the screen, 95% of users chose 'Daily Study' as their first feature.

We have decided to prioritize "daily study" by putting it at the top of our list.

Users preferred learning multiple types of English in a balanced manner.

After analyzing the test results, we have decided to provide ‘Multiple English learning activities’ on a daily basis.

We received positive feedback regarding quiz activities.

Users found the explanation modal provided after solving questions helpful for learning.

Users preferred the banner for the streak, but the message about the activity disappearing had a negative impact.

We opted to use a sentence with better visibility and a positive tone for the streak banner.

Iteration

Testing Insight

Users didn't want to turn off the flame icon but were confused about what the remaining time period meant.

Improvement

I highlighted the remaining days and hours in "weeks" for visibility.

Testing Insight

Users were hesitant to start because they didnt't know how long it would take before they started.
They also felt negatively about the wording of the time remaining.

Improvement

To encourage users, I added estimated completion time, user count, revised language, and a visual element.

Testing Insight

Users felt that tips and feedback were positive and felt they improved.
However, we found that they struggled to distinguish between answers and feedback.

Improvement

I improved the validation of tips and feedback and modified the UI to make answers and feedback more separate.

Final Design

The "Study" section now offers Ringle English content for daily learning outside of class.

1. Find all study materials in one place using the 'Study' menu in Ringle.

It is a New menu that offers a diverse range of content to help users learn.
Users can access various content to learn what they want at Ringle.

2. Learn an English expression in just 3-5 minutes with daily study activities!

Learn English expressions during your daily commute.

3. Ensure that learning experiences remain connected.

Providing feedback and motivation at touchpoints can keep users engaged, whether they quit or complete activities faster than anticipated.

Next Iteration Point

Since we had to create new and valuable expressions every week, we had to invest almost 10 hours per week on the operational side.

We decided to solve this problem
by partially automating it with the help of GPT-4.

What's important

1. The system must be able to conceptualize independently.
2. Generate a high-quality example for the prompt.
3. Output should be in the desired format.
4. Ensure that the generated model matches the intended output.

How to improve

1. Analyze popular days and concepts that users frequently run and complete.
2. Generate a month's worth of sample data.
3. Create idea prompts using over 3000 Ringle textbooks.

We decided to add a new "Feedback" section to make it easier for users to report errors or suggest improvements.

Result

Business hours have been reduced to 30 minutes, and feedback helps improve operations.

Since fully automating was not cost-effective, we opted for semi-automation. We selected a textbook, created a week's worth of activities using GPT, and reviewed the output on Slack.

Achievements

New page got 30% traffic in 2 months.

73.3% users used learning feature on non-class day.

Average 500 users completed an activity daily.

Takeaways

It reminded me that designers may have different intentions from the behavior of real users.
I realized the importance of iterating through tests, observing users, and making incremental improvements.

Removing the ambiguity was great because it helped us understand precisely what to improve based on user feedback.
As a team, we were under pressure to iterate quickly with limited time, but the positive feedback we received from the results made us feel proud.
